Nrega Workers Being Provided Health Cover by Govt

The Central Government of India has planned to provide health insurance cover for all NREGA workers, a move which may incur a expenditure on UPA, with the potential to deepen the credentials of the government.

The UPA is in constant discussion with a plan to extend the smart card driven health insurance cover to all NREGA workers. The beneficiaries of rural job scheme are those who have worked for 15 or more are entitled for this scheme. To implement this plan would require extra burden on rural ministry which have been able to identify APL beneficiaries among the workers. This may be enormous given that 75% of costs of health insurance would be borne by the centre. This scheme which proves as panacea to all problems would be attracting poor in big numbers.

The cost of implications for the proposal would be known only once it achieves saturation. This records shows that around 4.5 crore rural households are getting employed in 2008-2009 with the current levels of performance being hit for financial costs.
